Upsolve Inc., a non-profit developer of legal training software for debt counseling, won a court injunction to block New York from attempting to ban its products and services on the grounds that they amount to unlicensed practice of law.
New York’s unlicensed practice of law (UPL) rules “cannot be applied to Plaintiffs’ program because the First Amendment protects their legal advice as speech,” Judge Paul A. Crotty of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York said Tuesday.
Upsolve’s services also are in the interests of the public, the judge said.
