Meade Instruments Files Bankruptcy With Debts Up to $50 Million (1)

Telescope maker Meade Instruments Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection after a jury in a California federal court found the company liable to a competitor for $16.8 million.

Meade and its subsidiary Sunny Optics Inc. filed Chapter 11 on Dec. 4, before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California could enter a judgment based on the Nov. 26 verdict in favor of Orion Telescopes & Binoculars. The jury in the case found that Meade, whose parent company is based in China, engaged in price fixing and other antitrust violations.
