SunTrust Mortgage Inc. May 31 agreed to pay $21 million to resolve Justice Department claims that the firm violated the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act by charging some African-American and Hispanic customers higher mortgage rates and fees between 2005 and 2008 (United States v. SunTrust Mortgage Inc.).
The suit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and settled the same day, marks a settlement second in size only to a $335 million accord reached in December over lending practices by Countrywide (
