The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento plans to file for bankruptcy protection by March as it faces more than 250 lawsuits accusing its clergy and other employees of child sexual abuse.
The planned reorganization under Chapter 11 will allow the Catholic institution to “equitably respond to the large number of those who are victim-survivors of abuse,” Jaime Soto, bishop of Sacramento, said in a public letter published on Saturday. The Sacramento diocese would be the fourth to file for Chapter 11 in California to deal with an avalanche of child sexual abuse lawsuits.
