The bankrupt Catholic Diocese of Rochester in New York struck a deal to pay clergy child sex abuse victims $55 million and grant them rights to sue its insurers to collect more.
The church’s deal with the creditor committee that represents 470 victims would bring to a close its years-long legal battle fought in the bankruptcy court since its Chapter 11 filing in 2019. But the settlement terms also underscore the church insurers’ ongoing exposure that will continue to be fought over in the court.
