Rochester Diocese Loses Bid to Shield Parishes From Abuse Suits

The Diocese of Rochester can no longer use its bankruptcy proceedings to shield hundreds of parishes and other related entities from sexual abuse lawsuits, a New York bankruptcy judge ruled, as the diocese eyes a nonconsensual Chapter 11 settlement.

Despite spending nearly three years in bankruptcy, the diocese doesn’t appear to be advancing towards a comprehensive settlement with the 475 abuse victims whose lawsuits led the diocese to file for Chapter 11 in September 2019, Judge Paul R. Warren of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of New York said in a decision Monday.
