Puerto Rico Trucker Strike Ends With Promise of Rate Increase

Puerto Rico’s largest truck-driver’s union ended a two-day strike after the government agreed to increase cargo rates by about 35% despite initial objections from the federally-appointed board that controls the bankrupt island’s finances.

A spokesman for the union, called the Truckers Broad Front, confirmed that the government had agreed late Thursday to the rate increase and that the strike, which began on Wednesday, had been lifted.

The Fiscal Oversight and Management Board said it had not received details about the agreement, but that it appeared to violate the island’s 2021 Fiscal Plan.
