Pier 1 Bankruptcy Pause Extended Over Landlord Challenges

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Huennekens in a hearing Tuesday says Pier 1 can continue withholding rent payments at its retail locations through May, declining requests from landlords for some additional compensation.

  • “I certainly appreciate the pain the landlords are experiencing, but when there is no revenue, there’s nothing that we can do,” Huennekens says
  • Huennekens also extends pause on most proceedings in the bankruptcy
  • Some landlords argued in court papers they are being unfairly forced to finance the retailer’s use of space while the chain is shut down and asked that Pier 1 make “some minimum payments now”
