The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg, which includes 78 parishes and 72,000 Catholics in New York, filed for Chapter 11 protection to resolve sex abuse claims.
Ogdensburg is the sixth New York diocese to file Chapter 11 since the state passed the Child Victims Act in 2019. The law allowed adults who were sexually abused as children to file legal claims that were previously barred by the passage of time.
Between 2019 and 2021, 138 lawsuits were filed against the diocese, Bishop Terry R. LaValley said in a statement.
