Discount retailer Essex Technology Group, which does business as Bargain Hunt, has filed for bankruptcy, marking deepening woes for stores that target budget-conscious shoppers.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Tennessee on Monday, court documents show. It listed assets of $10 million to 50 million and liabilities of between $50 million and 100 million in its petition.

Bargain Hunt operates 91 stores across 10 states, selling everything from heaters to popcorn, according to its website. The company calls itself an “extreme value retail chain” as it offers discounts “30-70% off other retailers every-day prices.”
