Manhattan Bankruptcy Judge Bernstein to Retire After 26 Years

The longest continuously serving judge at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York is stepping down at the end of September 2020.

Judge Stuart M. Bernstein will retire after serving nearly 27 years on the bench of one of the nation’s most active and high-profile bankruptcy courts. The seasoned bankruptcy jurist has presided over a number of headline-grabbing cases, including the liquidation of Bernie Madoff’s defunct investment firm and the Gawker Media LLC estate.
