A bankrupt New York Catholic diocese and sex abuse claimants have agreed to financial terms of a deal that would compensate victims for abuse perpetrated by church leaders, a long-awaited breakthrough in a case that has been stalled for more than a year.

Jones Day lawyer Corinne Ball, representing Long Island’s Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, told a bankruptcy court Wednesday that the diocese and a committee representing abuse claimants had agreed to the cornerstone of a plan that would compensate survivors.
