Harrisburg Diocese’s Bankruptcy Plan With Victim Payout Approved

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg received court approval of a bankruptcy plan that establishes an $18.25 million trust to pay clergy abuse victims and puts in place stipulated child protection protocols.

The court ruling allowed the Pennsylvania diocese on Wednesday to wrap up three years of Chapter 11 proceedings spurred by mounting lawsuits from child sex abuse survivors.

The diocese serves an estimated 230,000 congregants across several counties. The Harrisburg diocese is one of several Catholic districts that has sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection over the past several years to address child abuse lawsuits.
