Ecuador Examining New Debt-for-Nature Swaps: Reuters

Ecuador is considering two possible options for debt swaps, including one tied to protecting parts of the Amazon rain forest, Reuters reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

  • Second option concerns funding a groundbreaking Marine Protected Area
  • Inter-American Development Bank and the US International Development Finance Corporation are being lined up to provide a credit guarantee and political risk insurance
  • Ecuador’s finance ministry and the IDB declined to comment to Reuters on the details of plans
    • DFC said it was exploring opportunities for debt conversion for nature transactions across the globe, without specifying the countries, according to Reuters
