DOJ Bankruptcy Unit Subpoenas Ex-Court Staff for Romance Trial

A Justice Department unit has issued subpoenas to former federal judicial employees to testify at an upcoming civil trial tied to an ex-bankruptcy judge’s once-secret romance with a Texas attorney.

The US Trustee, which serves as the Justice Department’s bankruptcy monitor, is seeking live testimony from former Houston bankruptcy judge David R. Jones and ex-Jackson Walker LLP partner Elizabeth Freeman as part of a trial scheduled in May. The trial will help determine whether the Texas law firm will have to disgorge millions of dollars for failing to disclose the romance between Jones and Freeman.
