Swaths of Manhattan’s retail hubs look like ghost towns these days. Even spookier for many New Yorkers is that a Halloween store is open where Barneys once sold the world’s most luxurious brands.
Spirit Halloween took over the space at 101 Seventh Ave. in Chelsea after it sat empty for two years. It was the site of the original Barneys New York -- debuting in 1923 as a men’s clothing merchant -- and home to several iterations of the store over the years. The latest shuttered in 2019, when the company filed for Chapter 11
