Company Ordered to Pay $4M For Mortgage Modification Scam

LOS ANGELES—A California court July 23 ordered defendants who ran a national mortgage modification scam to pay more than $4 million in penalties and restitution, including $2 million to consumers who were falsely promised modifications of their mortgage loans, California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris announced July 24 (California v. Statewide Financial Group Inc., Cal. Super. Ct., No. 30-2009-00125950, order filed 7/23/12).

The Superior Court in Orange County ordered Statewide Financial Group Inc., which did business as Homeowners Assistance and Webeatallrates.com, to provide every customer of Homeowner Assistance loan modifications a full refund upon request.
