Cinemark Soars as Analysts See Likely Bankruptcy for Rival AMC

Cinemark Holdings shares spiked for a fourth straight session on Thursday, as analysts continued to say that the movie-theater chain was better positioned in the current environment than rival AMC Entertainment.

  • MKM Partners wrote that a “bankruptcy appears likely” at AMC as the pandemic will likely keep theaters shut for months and “AMC lacks the liquidity to stay afloat until that time”
    • On Wednesday, Loop Capital Markets wrote that bankruptcy was “a distinct possibility” at AMC, which reportedly plans to cease paying rent to its landlords beginning in April
