Churchill Downs Sues Bankrupt Illinois Racetrack Over Wager Pool

Kentucky Derby owner Churchill Downs Inc. and the Delaware Park Casino sued Hawthorne Race Course Inc., alleging its wrongfully kept and misused hundreds of thousands of dollars in pooled horse race gambling bets.

The Stickney, Ill.-based 135-year-old horse racing venue has held on to more than $700,000 in pari-mutuel pool funds since it filed for Chapter 11 on Feb. 27 that were legally required to be held in trust for Churchill Downs and the Delaware Racing Association, according to a complaint filed Thursday in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
