California Objects to Growing Fees in Kidde-Fenwal Bankruptcy

California’s attorney general has asked for an end to mediation in the bankruptcy of fire protection equipment manufacturer Kidde-Fenwal Inc. over what the state says are “exorbitant” legal fees.

Rob Bonta, the attorney general for California, objected to the company’s request to extend months-long mediation in the Chapter 11 case, decrying “unbridled billing” in a filing Tuesday in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

California specifically called out $2,050-per-hour fees for mediator and ex-bankruptcy judge Robert Drain, now of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP, and former federal judge Layn R. Phillips’ $75,000 fee for each ...
