The Diocese of Buffalo’s minimal progress toward resolving more than 900 clergy sex abuse claims through mediation has prompted a judge to bring in additional help and set a September deadline to file a bankruptcy exit plan.
The case has been stalled as the New York diocese, insurers, and a committee representing the abuse claimants have struggled to reach a settlement.
The diocese filed for Chapter 11 nearly five years ago in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of New York to address the abuse litigation but has yet to propose a reorganization plan.
