The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany agreed to settle for $8 million the first of seven clergy sex abuse lawsuits that were permitted to go forward against the bankrupt diocese.
On the eve of what would have been the first clergy abuse jury trial in New York, the Catholic jurisdiction agreed to settle plaintiff Michael Harmon’s 2020 suit alleging he was abused for several years beginning at age 11 by the diocese’s former vice chancellor, Harmon’s attorneys announced Friday.
The settlement could broadly affect the diocese’s two-year-old bankruptcy case, which involves more than 400 clergy sex abuse claimants.
