Warren Asks Bessent to Terminate $20 Billion Argentina Swap Line

Senator Elizabeth Warren is requesting that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent terminate a $20 billion currency swap line with Argentina, asserting that if the arrangement has run its course, it should be shut down.

The US extended a line of credit to Argentina before its 2025 midterm elections as Argentine President Javier Milei’s party was under pressure after losing a local election in the province of Buenos Aires. In September, Bessent said the support was meant to serve as a “bridge” to help Milei get through the election and continue his economic reforms.
