Visa Accused of Infringing Contactless Payment Patents

A Texas-based patent-assertion company sued Visa Inc. over nine patents related to contactless payment processing.

Liberty Peak Ventures LLC is accusing the credit card company of infringing its patents through “tap to pay” features and Visa systems compatible with app-based mobile payment services like Google Pay and Samsung Pay, according to the complaint filed on Wednesday in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas’ Austin Division.

It’s Liberty’s latest suit against a financial company based on patents that originally belonged to American Express Co.
