The free, IRS-run tax filing tool that launched to the wider public Tuesday is expected to be used by about 100,000 taxpayers this filing season, Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo said.
Taxpayers with relatively simple returns in 12 states, including New York, California, and Texas, are eligible to file their returns directly to the federal government at no cost starting Tuesday after months of internal IRS testing. About 15,000 taxpayers have created an account, started a return, or completed a return using Direct File, Treasury later clarified on Tuesday.
