Stripe Hires Ex-Microsoft Executive as Financial-Services Head

Stripe Inc., one of the world’s most valuable startups, tapped a former Microsoft Corp. executive to lead its sprawling financial-services division.

James Phillips will join as president of the unit, which includes the firm’s capital- and treasury-services offerings. He spent a decade at Microsoft, most recently overseeing 15,000 employees as president of the technology giant’s digital-transformation platform group.

“James brings a rare mix of experience,” Stripe Chief Executive Officer Patrick Collison said in a statement Friday. “He drove tremendously impressive product development and innovation at Microsoft.”
