Norges Bank’s researchers plan to prepare a recommendation by the end of 2025 on whether a central bank digital currency should be introduced in Norway and in what form, the bank said.
After experimental testing of technical solutions and analyzing the purpose of issuing a CBDC, the project has moved to a fifth phase, intended to provide a basis for deciding whether Norges Bank should introduce such an instrument, it said on Monday. While research has so far mainly focused on retail CBDC, the new phase will include the study of wholesale forms, it added.
