Job, Rental Applicant Screenings Come Under CFPB, FTC Scrutiny

Federal consumer protection regulators are teaming up to ensure that tenant and employment screening companies don’t use improper name-matching techniques to blackball applicants.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Thursday issued an advisory opinion that screening companies—including units of large consumer credit reporting bureaus—that rely solely on name-matching techniques to check the background of apartment or job applicants are violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The bureau plans to work closely with the Federal Trade Commission to heighten oversight of the practice, the agencies said.
