Illinois lawmakers voted to delay a statewide ban on credit card swipe fees for retail tips and taxes while a federal judge weighs a challenge to the law filed by banks.

The Illinois Interchange Fee Prohibition Act (HB 4951) was scheduled to take effect starting next month, but the state legislature over the weekend voted to push back the effective date until July 2026 (HB 0742).
