Kevin Hassett, a top candidate for Federal Reserve chair, said the US central bank put its independence and credibility in jeopardy by expanding beyond its mandate.

“The question is, has the current central bank been as independent as we would like, as transparent as we would like?” Hassett, a top White House economic adviser, said Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation. “And I think there’s some dispute about that.”
