Debt Collectors to Drop Suit Over Biden’s Medical Bill Guidance

Debt collectors will end a lawsuit challenging Biden-era guidance on collecting inflated medical bills after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said it has no plans to resuscitate the now-withdrawn advisory opinion.

The CFPB rescinded the medical debt collection advisory opinion along with nearly 70 other guidance documents in May and the agency doesn’t intend to reissue it, according to a status report filed Monday in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

The advisory opinion, issued last October, calls on debt collectors to determine whether debts are “reasonable” before moving to collect on them, among other provisions.
