Comerica Bank Sued for Federal Benefit Card Service Failures (2)

Comerica Bank failed to provide adequate customer service and charged illegal ATM fees for recipients of Social Security and other federal benefits processed through debit cards, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said in a lawsuit.

Dallas-based Comerica, a subsidiary of Comerica Inc., operates the Direct Express card service that allows people who don’t have bank accounts or are underbanked to get their Social Security and other federal benefits directly.

But Comerica improperly cut off about 24 million customer assistance calls and charged improper ATM fees to more than 1 million customers, the CFPB said in a lawsuit filed Friday ...
