CFPB to Restart Investigations After Transferring Litigation

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is set to restart some investigations even as the Trump administration has moved all agency litigation to the Justice Department.

CFPB enforcement investigations have largely halted since acting Director Russell Vought took over leadership of the agency in February. And the agency informed staff earlier this month that all CFPB litigation, including active enforcement cases, would be transferred to the Justice Department due to funding concerns.

But Vought greenlit “many investigations” to restart, according to a Tuesday email to enforcement staff from Michael Salemi, the CFPB’s principal deputy enforcement director, obtained by Bloomberg Law.
