American Express Dodges Penalties as CFPB Probe Over Sales Ends

American Express Co. said a CFPB investigation into the company’s consumer sales practices has ended without penalties.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notified American Express that its investigation closed last month and doesn’t “intend to recommend an enforcement action be taken against us at this time,” the company said Friday in the Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

But investigations by the US Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York, the Justice Department, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency remain open and could still result in financial penalties against American Express, the New York-based credit card ...
