UN Unveils Proposal to Monitor AI’s Environmental Impact

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres says it’s time to start measuring the impact that artificial intelligence is having on the climate and nature.

Speaking at London Climate Action Week on Tuesday, Guterres unveiled the UN’s plan to create an AI environmental transparency initiative.

“I’m calling on every major AI company to measure and publicly disclose the full environmental impact of its systems, carbon, water and land footprints,” he said. Hyperscalers should “commit to power every data center with renewable energy by 2030” and that means “no more shifting the burden onto those least able to bear it.”
