Sonae CEO Says Upgrading Skills Is Priority for Future With AI

Sonae SGPS SA, Portugal’s biggest private-sector employer, is working on upgrading the skills of its workers in a bid to help them deal with new technologies including artificial intelligence.

“We’re making sure that in every place that we see, we can reskill,” Chief Executive Officer Claudia Azevedo said during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Sonae has about 47,000 workers and owns Portugal’s biggest supermarket chain, as well as other businesses including real estate and telecommunications firms. The holding company is controlled by the Azevedo family and is based in Maia, northern Portugal.
