President Donald Trump‘s reversal of the Biden administration’s artificial intelligence strategy leaves in doubt the future of the US AI Safety Institute, housed within the Commerce Department and created on the heels of the former president’s AI executive order.

The institute, which has about 30 employees across offices in Washington and San Francisco, has recruited top computer scientists and cybersecurity experts from places such as Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its primary focus is assessing the risk of AI in key areas of public safety and national security.
