New York Times Copyright Claims Advance in OpenAI Lawsuit (1)

OpenAI Inc. failed to convince a federal judge to dismiss several copyright infringement claims brought against it by newspapers including the New York Times Co.

Judge Sidney H. Stein denied the tech company’s bid to partially dismiss direct copyright infringement claims and also declined to ax contributory copyright infringement claims over end-users’ alleged infringement, according to an order issued Wednesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. But the federal judge granted OpenAI and Microsoft Corp.'s request to trim the lawsuit by dismissing other claims, including some brought under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
