Copyright Office AI Deepfake Report Urges New Federal Law

The US Copyright Office called on Congress to create a new federal law that would protect all individuals from the deliberate distribution of unauthorized deepfakes.

According to a new report released Wednesday, the office’s analysis of deepfakes found federal legislation is “urgently needed” because existing state laws are inconsistent and inefficient to address the speed and scale at which generative AI can produce and disseminate digital replicas capable of authentically impersonating anyone.
