Judge to Narrow Sarah Silverman’s AI Copyright Case Against Meta

A federal judge said at a Thursday hearing in San Francisco he would likely dismiss large portions of Sarah Silverman’s copyright infringement lawsuit claiming Meta Platforms Inc.'s generative AI model LLaMA copied her book “The Bedwetter” without permission.

But Judge Vince Chhabria appeared more friendly to Silverman and other authors’ core theory of copyright infringement: that Meta had unlawfully obtained hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books that were ingested into the tech company’s large language model to “train” it. Meta hasn’t yet contested that particular theory, and Chhabria said the case can proceed to the discovery process for that claim ...
