Colorado AI Law Tests Gov. Jared Polis as Special Session Begins

Democratic Gov. Jared Polis faces a test on how far he can take political pragmatism as Colorado lawmakers on Thursday begin a special legislative session.

Federal funding cuts are the overriding reason he’s calling lawmakers back to Denver, but the two-term governor is also making them consider changes to the state’s first-in-the-nation law targeting bias in systems that automate decisions in employment, legal services and other sectors. Tech companies, industry groups and venture capitalists have argued complying with the law will increase costs and hinder innovation.
