Some Chinese AI chip companies are designing less powerful processors to retain access to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) production and comply with US restrictions, Reuters reports, citing four people with knowledge of the matter.
- MetaX and Enflame submitted downgraded designs of their chips to TSMC in late 2023; they had previously marketed their chips as being comparable to Nvidia’s graphics processing units
- MetaX and Enflame did not respond to Reuters requests for comment
- TSMC declined to comment to Reuters on individual customers
