Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) cautioned against overregulation of artificial intelligence Wednesday, as state lawmakers push measures that would place safeguards on the emerging technology to curb its potential hazards.

“We dominate in this space. I want to continue to dominate in this space. I don’t want to cede this space to other states or other countries,” Newsom said during a joint AI summit organized by California universities and his administration in the Bay Area. The discussion was part of his executive order on the rapidly advancing technology.
