Bills Curbing AI Deepfakes in Elections Approved by Senate Panel

Lawmakers took the first steps to advance legislation that seeks to address artificial intelligence risks to US elections and democracy.

Members of the Senate Rules Committee on Wednesday approved three bipartisan measures that would crack down on AI’s use in federal elections, require labeling on AI-generated political content to promote transparency, and develop guidelines on AI for election officials.

High-profile, alarming deepfakes—AI-generated content that manipulates images, audio, and video—of 2024 candidates including President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have triggered widespread concerns over AI’s ability to fuel disinformation and mistrust and undermine election integrity.
