AI Wrongly Blamed for Britain’s Job Losses, Analysis Suggests

Artificial intelligence is yet to have a major impact on Britain’s jobs market, according to new analysis, despite fears that the technology has been sapping demand for white collar workers.

Bloomberg Economics found that job vacancies in roles exposed to AI were already falling before OpenAI’s ChatGPT was released in late 2022. They dropped further in the period immediately after ChatGPT’s emergence but have actually increased since the summer of 2024.

Separate tax data also shows the number of private-sector workers in several vulnerable sectors has risen since ChatGPT kickstarted the race to develop the technology.
