Political operatives who use artificial intelligence to clone politicians’ voices and distribute messages via robocalls would face new restrictions under a plan advanced Wednesday by the Federal Communications Commission.
Callers using an AI-generated voice to reach voters by phone would need to clearly disclose it at the start of each message, according to the plan the commissioners agreed to propose to the public at a meeting.
The restrictions, if implemented, would likely not be final before voters begin casting their ballots in November’s presidential election.
