Visa Must Face Debit Card Monopoly Class Action, Judge Rules

A $5.6 billion settlement over card swipe fees in 2019 doesn’t apply to a new set of antitrust cases accusing Visa Inc.of monopolizing the debit card market, a federal judge ruled.

The two sets of cases do overlap, but the facts in the new group “are materially different” from the earlier group, US District Judge Margo Brodie ruled on Wednesday in Brooklyn, New York.

Brodie’s ruling relates to an October suit filed against Visa by merchants. Their claims mirror those in a US Justice Department case filed in Manhattan federal court the month before.
