US Soccer and Major League Soccer were portrayed to a jury Tuesday as monopolistic entities that denied an upstart league with potential from competing at the highest levels of the sport—driving it out of business and hurting fans.

US Soccer defended itself, saying the plaintiff North American Soccer League never met standards for the top-tier designation and chose not to invest in players needed to compete at that level.
