Unions Seek DOJ Probe of UPMC Over Antitrust Labor Claims (1)

A group of unions asked the Justice Department to investigate the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for allegedly denying employment law rights and violating federal antitrust laws by abusing its labor market dominance.

The hospital system, which employs 92,000 workers and operates 40 hospitals, allegedly pursued a series of mergers that boosted its market power, suppressed wages, increased workloads, and used noncompete clauses to limit employee mobility, according to the letter. Such practices may have violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act, which prohibits monopolization and attempts to monopolize, the unions said.
