Sobeys, Loblaw Probe Advanced by Canada Antitrust Watchdog

Canada’s Competition Bureau said it got two court orders to advance its investigations into the use of property controls by Empire and George Weston, the parent companies of grocery chains Sobeys and Loblaw.

  • Orders require the companies to produce records and information relevant to the probes, which are currently focused on assessing the use of property controls in the Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Agency is seeking to determine whether anti-competitive restrictions on the use of real estate are impacting competition in the retail sale of food products
